About the Department

Chittaranjan National Cancer Institute began its research efforts in 1957. At that time research activities at this institute had emphasized on the understanding of the biology of cancer particularly of the predominant types viz. oral cavity and uterine cervix. Today, Research at CNCI has reorganized in its infrastructure both for basic and clinical research to include need-based contemporary as well as futuristic research areas. The current approach is based on a programme-oriented research in areas of identification of risk factors predominantly responsible for the development of cancer includes oral, breast, lung, ovary, colon etc. Scientists are devoting themselves to understand the molecular mechanism of development of these cancer types and target at different stages of the disease. The collaborative efforts between scientist & clinicians are generating the new era of preclinical model development as well as new clinical trial design which ultimately helping the cancer patients. Different arenas of investigations are going on to fight against cancer. A blend of basic as well as translational research is going on.

The institute's efforts are focused on understanding the molecular mechanisms of cancer, particularly in prevalent types such as oral, breast, lung, ovarian, and colon cancers. Research areas include the identification of risk factors, development of preclinical models, and design of new clinical trials. The collaborative efforts between scientists and clinicians aim to translate research findings into improved cancer treatments and patient care.

Facilities

The research infrastructure at CNCI Kolkata is designed to support a broad range of cancer research activities.

Central Research Instrumentation Facility (CRIF): This facility houses advanced instruments for molecular and cellular biology, genomics, proteomics, and imaging. Key equipment includes flow cytometers, real-time PCR machines, next-generation sequencers, and high-resolution microscopes. These tools are essential for cutting-edge cancer research.

Animal House: CNCI's animal facility supports preclinical studies using various animal models. It is equipped for the breeding and maintenance of laboratory animals, ensuring ethical standards and proper care. This infrastructure is crucial for in vivo studies of cancer biology, drug efficacy, and toxicity.

Clinical Trial Unit: The unit is designed to facilitate the conduct of phase I-IV clinical trials. It includes spaces for patient consultations, monitoring, and data management. This unit helps translate laboratory findings into clinical practice by testing new cancer therapies in patients.

Academic Activities

The research wing of CNCI Kolkata is actively engaged in various academic activities, including:

Seminars and Workshops: Regularly organized on topics related to cancer research and treatment.

Training Programs: For students, researchers, and clinicians in advanced research techniques and methodologies.

Collaborative Research Projects: Partnering with national and international institutions for joint research initiatives.

Publications: Producing research papers, articles, and reports in reputed scientific journals.

Conferences: Hosting and participating in national and international conferences to share research findings and advancements.
